How to Actually Get the Right Sinus Diagnosis

How to Actually Get the Right Sinus Diagnosis

(and Stop Guessing)

If you’ve been dealing with chronic congestion, sinus pressure, or postnasal drip, you’re not alone-and you’re not crazy for feeling frustrated.

One of the biggest challenges in sinus care today is that most doctor visits are rushed. There simply isn’t enough time to unpack the full story behind your symptoms. So what happens?

You leave with a prescription… but not always with answers.

And here’s the problem:
You can’t make a confident decision about treatment—especially something like surgery—if you don’t fully understand what’s causing your symptoms.

That’s where preparation comes in.

Walking into your appointment with the right questions can completely change the trajectory of your care. It helps you take back control and turns the visit into a conversation, not just a quick transaction.

Because sinus symptoms can come from many different causes, including:

  • Viral or bacterial infections

  • Allergies

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Structural issues (like a deviated septum)

  • Even migraine or reflux

The goal isn’t just to “treat symptoms.”
It’s to figure out what’s driving them.

Before Your Appointment: Set Yourself Up for Success

A little preparation can make a big difference.

Write your questions down ahead of time
When you’re in the room, it’s easy to forget what you wanted to ask.

Take notes (or ask permission to record key points)
This helps you process the information later, especially if decisions need to be made.

Bring a trusted person with you
A family member or friend can help you stay focused and catch things you might miss.

If time runs out, ask this simple question:
👉 “What’s the best way to get the rest of my questions answered?”
(Portal message, phone call, or follow-up visit)

This small shift turns a rushed visit into an ongoing conversation, which is often what complex sinus issues actually require.

Start Here: Questions to Ask Your Doctor

If you’re trying to get to the root of your sinus issues, here are key questions that can guide a more complete evaluation:

  1. What do you think is the most likely cause of my symptoms?

  2. Do my symptoms meet criteria for a true sinus infection, or could this be something else?

  3. Would a nasal endoscopy help clarify what’s going on?
(This is an in-office procedure that allows direct visualization of the nasal passages and sinus openings.)

  4. Do I need a CT scan of my sinuses? If so, what are we looking for?
(Imaging can help identify inflammation, blockage, or structural issues.)

  5. Could allergies be contributing to my symptoms? Should I have allergy testing?

  6. Would a nasal or sinus culture be helpful to guide treatment?
(Especially if symptoms are persistent or recurrent.)

  7. Are there any structural issues affecting my airflow or drainage?

  8. Could something like reflux or migraine be contributing to these symptoms?

  9. What are my treatment options beyond antibiotics?

  10. At what point would surgery be considered—and how do we know if I’m a good candidate?

Why This Matters

Too often, people are treated with repeated antibiotics or quick fixes without ever stepping back to understand the full picture.

That’s how people get stuck in cycles of:

  • Temporary relief

  • Symptoms returning

  • Escalating treatments

But when you take the time to ask better questions, something shifts.

You move from feeling like something is happening to you
to becoming an active participant in your care.

And that’s where real progress begins.

If this resonates with you, you’re exactly why I created my course the Sinus Reset—to help people understand their symptoms, ask better questions, and finally break the cycle. Click here to get started today!

Because the goal isn’t just to breathe better for a few weeks.
It’s to understand your body well enough to create lasting change.
